How Did I Test The Best Boots For Asphalt Work
Many people are interested in how we choose work boots. So, for those interested in how we review the best boots for asphalt work, here’s the process…
1) Comfort Test
Given that asphalt workers are used to working on their feet for long hours (8 to 10 hours shifts sometimes) I made sure to stress test work boots according to these strict guidelines and I did it in uneven surfaces where the pressure on the feet and joints was much harder. The ones that supported my feet and brought relief to my joints were selected for the rest of the tests.
Asphalt workers are constantly handling dangerous and hot materials (like hot pavement) which is why I made sure to test the breathability features by paying attention whether my feet were sweaty or not when working near these materials.
2) Protection Test
Asphalt workers have to deal with dangerous hot materials that could harm their feet. This is why I made sure to put a bit of hot pavement on each work boot to see if the boots came built with materials rugged enough to protect my feet from coming in contact with these dangerous substances.
Given that asphalt workers have to work in the outdoors exposed to, sometimes, extreme weathers I made sure to test the work boots and see how they performed in cold, hot, snowy, dusty and humid weathers. If the boots maintained my feet dry and comfy, then they were deemed as “good boots for asphalt workers”.
3) Durability Test
As explained, asphalt workers are exposed to abrasive materials (like hot pavement or other chemicals) that could ruin the boots. So, in order to test the durability of the boots, I made sure to drop a bit of these substances from time to time over the length of a few months to see whether the boots had quality materials able to deal with them, if they did, then the boots were included in this article.
Must-Have Features For The Best Asphalt Work Boots
1) Comfort & Convenience Attributes
There are specific features that the best boots for asphalt work must have given the problems asphalt workers have to deal with on a daily basis…
A) Cushioned Footbeds And Shock Absorbing Midsoles
Asphalt workers are known for having to work for long hours on their feet, sometimes 8 to 10 hours straight, which puts a strain on our backs, knees, and feet, leaving us with all sorts of pains.
Therefore I recommend looking for work boots with cushioned footbeds and shock absorbing midsoles given that these will provide the support necessary for the feet, knees and back to rest and recover which will ultimately erase the pain and let you work in peace.
B) Outsoles That Won’T Leave Marks
The hot pavement is something that we must deal with on a regular basis which presents us a big risk of ruining the work by leaving marks, which is pretty easy to do given that the hot pavement is really malleable.
Thus, I recommend getting work boots with outsoles that have treds which won’t leave marks so you can work without worrying about completely ruining your work.
I mean, there is no better sensation than working stress-free, right?
C) Breathable Features
The temperature is a big problem for asphalt workers who sometimes have to work in really hot weathers while dealing with piping hot materials which are not only risky but it also makes you sweat a lot (producing odor), making things much worse!
This is why I recommend getting work boots with breathable features as these will let the air flow which will maintain your feet not only protected but also cooler.
2) Protective Attributes
Asphalt workers are in constant contact with hot and abrasive materials that could ruin their boots or injure them at any time. There’s no telling on what can happen if an asphalt worker doesn’t use the correct pair of work boots.
A) Composite Safety Toes
A good idea might be to get work boots with composite toes as these don’t conduct heat, which is essential when handling hot pavement or when working under the sun as it will keep your feet isolated from external hot temperatures and protected from getting your toes crushed all at the same time.
Getting injured sucks…
Asphalt workers might get additional benefit from this specific feature given the fact that they are used to handle heavy machinery (i.e. steamrollers) which could at any time harm their toes. Thus, with these composite safety toes, the workers will have the guarantee nothing is going to crush their toes at least!
B) Abrasive Resistant Outsoles
Getting abrasive resistant outsoles might also be a good idea as this attribute will guarantee that your boots are not going to be ruined and that you won’t be getting any chemical burns or nothing similar which is a pretty cool assurance to have when you have these types of responsibilities… right?
C) Get 8 Inch High Boots…
To deal with the mentioned abrasive materials it might be good to get work boots that are a little bit taller.
My aim is to get 8 Inch boots so they are high enough to protect not only your feet but also ankles so none of these abrasive substances can harm or burn your body.
I mean, I always like having an “additional” layer of protection when managing hot pavement.
D) Waterproofing & Insulation
There is no worst feeling than seeing your boots get ruined like they are nothing.
This is a problem that most asphalt workers have to deal with as they frequently have to work in the outdoors exposed to rain, snow, hot and cold weathers for long hours while being on their feet.
They also deal with cleaning tasks that might get their feet wet because they have to use abundant water to perform them…
This situation requires for their boots to have specific attributes that are hard to find all at the same time in one pair of work boots.
This is why I recommend to my fellow asphalt workers to get work boots with waterproofing and insulation so they have the guarantee that no liquids are going to enter the feet and that they will be protected from cold and snow.
I mean, I know these attributes might be a bit “over-protective” but that’s how I roll, I love to work knowing that I’m covered in all fronts
3) Durability Attributes
A) Abrasive Resistant Materials And Good Construction Methods
Cleaning tasks with water or abrasive chemical products have to be done by asphalt workers fairly frequently which generates a risk of contamination, the risk of chemical burns, and the occasional uncomfortable wet feet…
Therefore I always recommend getting really tough boots made with high-quality materials which are able to resist abrasions but also manufactured with top-quality construction methods.
This will add years of durability to the boots and avoid the frustration of having to replace your boots frequently!
