Landscaping is an art form. Landscapers have the job of transforming elements of nature just to achieve visual appeal. It’s a creative process that requires experience and craft.
Sadly, these professionals have a lot of issues with their work boots, such as:
- Working all day on their feet using boots that don’t have the proper support features
- Being exposed to a wide range of temperatures on the same day (cold mornings, hot afternoons, rainy days, etc…) puts a lot of stress in their work boots
- Work boots manufactured with low-quality materials that don’t last more than a few months in the outdoors
- Being exposed to getting their toes crushed by heavy falling objects such as heavy bricks, cement wheelbarrows, tools, etc…
All these issues require landscapers to choose work boots with lots of different features. To make things easier for these hard-working tradesmen I made sure to test and research lots of work boots to arrive at those that performed the best for the specific needs that landscapers have.

Quick Comparison Table
Must-have Features of the Best Work Boots for Landscaping
There is a list of features work boots must have to be considered suitable for landscaping. These are some of the most important ones:
Waterproof membrane
Exposing your work boots to constantly getting wet by the rain and dry by the blazing sun is something very common for landscapers. You never know how crazy the weather is going to be, the only thing for sure is that your work boots are going to pay all the consequences.
In that context, I’d recommend getting work boots with a quality waterproof membrane that’ll keep the landscaper’s feet dry when exposed to the rain but also will make the boots deal much better with the sudden change of temperatures occurring in the outdoors.
Mesh lining
Landscaping is a synonym of working outdoors, being extremely active, and sweating all over. One of the body parts that sweats the most is by far the feet, as they are isolated by socks and a pair of work boots on top of them.
Thus, getting work boots with good breathability features such as mesh linings with moisture wicking attributes is a perfect way to keep the feet dry when exposed to hot and humid summer days walking all day in wet grass.
Traction outsole
Nobody wants to slip and fall when walking on wet grass.
This is why I recommend landscapers to get work boots with proper slip-resistant outsoles as it’s the only way to get the guarantee they’re not going to fall face-first into the grass.
Pro tip: if the outsoles have directional lugs it will help them walk on muddy grass with almost perfect grip avoiding these types of accidents. So, be on the lookout for those!
Safety toes
The hazards of a landscaping work site are plentiful. I mean, landscapers work with heavy tools and machines such as:
- lawn mowers
- hedge clippers
- weed whackers
- bricks and Belgium blocks
- dump trucks
- etc…
All these things can, in one way or another, completely crush their toes. Thus, I recommend getting work boots with proper safety toes to isolate their toes from any falling objects that might generate nasty toe injuries. I mean, you don’t want to work knowing that your toes could be crushed at any time, right?
There are lot’s of safety toes you can choose from, but for the most part, the most famous ones are:
- Steel toes
- Composite toes
- Alloy/aluminum toes
Any choice of safety toes would be good for landscapers. However, I’m all up for lightweight work boots, which is why I’d choose alloy or aluminum safety toes as they are the lightest.
Cushioned footbeds & shock-absorbing midsoles
Have you ever walked 10 hours straight on the grass without rest? Well, that’s what a landscaper does EVERY SINGLE DAY.
In that context, I recommend getting work boots with proper comfort features such as cushioned footbeds and shock-absorbing midsoles as this is the best way to make sure their feet are going to be properly cushioned. That way, one can forget about going home with excruciating feet pain.
How Did I Test the Best Work Boots for Landscaping?
Some people are curious about the process I follow to test and research work boots before recommending them. This is the specific process I’ve followed for the best work boots for landscapers:
Comfort Test
During this test, I made sure to walk all day long on both hard fields and soft wet grass to replicate what a landscaper does most of the day. To be honest, I walked on all types of terrains in the outdoors.
I paid close attention to how my feet felt at the end of the day after having spent 8 to 10 hours doing this. If my feet felt relaxed and without pain, I would select the boots for further testing.
Protection Test
In this test, I made sure to walk on all slippery surfaces in the outdoors, whether it’d be muddy fields or wet grass. The purpose was to see if the work boots being tested had proper slip-resistant outsoles to prevent slips and nastier injuries.
Additionally, I let heavy tools (hedge clippers) fall from safe heights to analyze if the work boots being tested provided enough toe-protection to keep them safe from getting crushed.
Durability Test
The durability test consisted of using each pair of work boots for consecutive months and stress test them in the outdoors. I’d work walking all day long in the fields demanding the most I could out of my work boots.
If the tested boots endured this usage while maintaining a “like-new” condition, then I would list them for my list of the best hot weather work boots for summer.
Frequently Asked Questions
There’re a lot of questions related to getting the best work boots for summer. This is my attempt to answer most of them:
What shafts should the best work boots for landscaping have?
Jobs like landscaping demand a mix of comfort and protection attributes from work boots. The tricky part is though that the more protective the work boot is, the bulkier and more uncomfortable it gets. Thus, one has to find a balance between these two opposite poles.
My answer to this dilemma is selecting work boots with either a 6-inch or 8-inch shafts as they provide the best combination of ankle protection and ergonomic design.
To be more specific, if one is exposed to irregular terrains and other colleagues let heavy tools lying around unsafely frequently, I’d go for an 8-inch shaft work boot as it’d protect my ankles the most and give me better stability on these sketchy surfaces. Otherwise, I’d go for a 6-inch work boot as it’s shorter, more comfortable, and still protective enough for a landscaper.
What kind of shoes do landscapers wear?
It depends on the landscaper. However, there’s a set of features most landscapers look for in a pair of work boots.
Let me share the “secret sauce” of boot attributes with you:
- Ergonomic designs and light materials used in the manufacturing process to make walking all day on the field something manageable
- Safety toes for preventing toes get crushed by heavy falling landscaping elements like bricks and Belgium blocks
- Slip-resistant outsoles (with directional lugs if possible) to guarantee superior traction on slippery surfaces like wet grass
- Breathable and waterproof membranes to let work boots adapt to sudden weather changes without breaking while maintaining the feet fresh and dry
Are safety toes needed for landscaping?
This is an easy answer: YES, ABSOLUTELY.
If you see any landscaping site the first thing that’s gonna pop in your head is: “how messy is this place!!”
The reason behind this is that landscapers tend to leave heavy and dangerous tools laying around without proper safety measures. Thus, it’s very common for them to get their toes crushed when these tools accidentally fall.
As a result, I‘d recommend all landscapers reading this article getting work boots with safety toes as it’s the fastest and simplest way of knowing their toes won’t get destroyed by landscaping tools falling at the wrong place and time.
What type of safety toes do the best work boots for landscaping use?
Have you felt your toes be crushed by heavy falling objects? Well sadly, that’s exactly what happened to me various times and I don’t wish it upon anybody.
This is why I recommend all landscapers to get work boots with safety toes of any kind they can afford.
However, if you’d ask me what type of safety toe work boot to get, I’d tell you the best ones for landscaping are the lightest and smallest. Thus, alloy, composite, or aluminum safety toes should work perfectly for a landscaper as they are both protective and light.
Steel toes work great for landscaping too, but in my personal view, I find them a bit bulky and heavy.
Should I pick pull-on work boots or regular work boots for landscaping?
Well, to be honest, that’s up to you. There are advantages and disadvantages to each type of work boot.
However, it’s my personal preference to go with traditional lace-up work boots for landscaping as they provide:
- Better fit
- More breathability
- More comfort as they’re more lightweight and less bulky
- Equal protection as pull-on work boots
Of course, you might have other preferences, which is why I listed pull on work boots for landscaping in this article too.
How to clean work boots for landscaping?
There’s a simple step-by-step guide I follow to clean and maintain my work boots for landscaping.
It goes like this:
- Clean the work boots with a brush, soap, and water until the rinse water is transparent
- Dry them with a towel and let them rest for about 30 minutes
- Apply leather conditioner with bare hands and massage it against the leather
- Let the boots rest for another 30 mins
- Clean the excess leather conditioner from the boots with a clean towel
- Done!
What socks are better for the best landscaping work boots?
Working outdoors under the blazing sun makes landscapers sweat a lot. If they don’t want to end up working all day using wet socks with terrible odor they must choose socks made with certain materials.
These materials are synthetic fibers or wool. The reasoning behind recommending socks manufactured with these materials is that they wick away the moisture quickly and break down odor in the sweat which is essential for keeping the feet dry and smelling fresh.
Pro-Tips for Landscapers
With years of experience comes years of knowledge. These are the pro-tips I’ve gathered about the best approach to landscaping:
Hydration
There’s no worse feeling than working outdoors under the sun for 10 hours without having taken a sip of water all day. Your water reserves deplete fast and if you don’t hydrate yourself, you can pass out.
This is why I always make sure to carry a big water jug with me when landscaping, taking short sips from it 15 to 20 minutes apart. This is the best way to guarantee that my water reserves stay stable and that I don’t put my health at risk.
Be Patient
Landscaping and gardening tools are dangerous. I mean, hedge trimmers, branch cutters, hand saws, etc.. all have sharp blades that could severely injure landscapers if not taken seriously.
This is why I think landscapers should take as much time as possible, leaving deadlines aside, and make sure everything is turned off before sharpening or fixing a landscaping tool that somehow got stuck. That way, one can make sure that no nasty accidents are going to happen and that everything is going to continue working perfectly for the rest of the working day.
Use the right workwear
There’s no better way to secure a productive landscaping day than using the proper work gear for landscaping. When I say “proper work gear” I mean:
- Good work boots
- Grip work gloves
- UV protected safety glasses
- Durable work pants
- Safety helmet when using power trimmers
- etc
These features are essential for guaranteeing landscapers the safety necessary to work without running into any problems or unexpected accidents.
Avoid leaving tools unattended
If you once felt your toes getting crushed by heavy landscaping tools then you’d completely agree with making sure all your landscaping tools are safely stationed. I mean, if one of these tools (like a hedge clipper or power trimmer) were to fall into your or your colleague’s feet, you’d be done.
I mean, I can’t begin to tell you how many nasty injuries I’ve seen when landscaping. This is why I’d like to recommend landscapers to make sure ALL THEIR TOOLS, it doesn’t matter if they are 1 or 2, or if they’re big or small. All their tools should be properly stationed to avoid nasty injuries
Keep the blades sharp
As previously mentioned, most landscaping tools rely on blades: branch cutters, pruners, gardening knives, you name it.
Thus, it’s a great idea to make sure, before starting the workday, that all your landscaping tools are properly sharped. If not, you run the risk of not being able to do your job properly.
Hey there,
What about Blundstone steel toes? Any experience with those?
And are all of these boots generally the same in terms of width? Any for those rare gents who have narrow feet?
Thanks.
Sure!
Just search on this site for words like “blundstone” or “blundstone steel toe” and you should find reviews I did based on work boots from that specific brand.
Thanks for the comment!
Timberland mudslinger is a great boot for landscaping, it pretty much the same as the mudsill but protects your ankles better
Hi,
Thanks for the review. Most of our business is comprised of design install. Issues I run across are: broken sole/chassis from putting pressure on shovels and steel spades.
Of all the boots you reviewed the Timberland pro direct seems like one with the thickest sole. The steel toe is not as important to me. I find it cumbersome and aggeivating when I’m moving my feet fast but I am interested in the durability of the sole.
Do you have any opinion on that?
Again, thanks for the review – appreciate you taking the time to do the research.
Landscapers need boots that are low top and waterproof with a good tread on the bottom. A good hiking boot that is all leather, but no mesh. I was using the Merrill Mohabs until they started putting mesh in them. The grass clippings get into the mesh and ruin the water proofing. If a company made a shoe that was all of that, I would but it!!
I want to know which one you will personally prefer?
How about female landscapers?
This article emphasizes how being online continuous can bring a substantial change for this type of business. I completely agree with this viewpoint as I have been a part of their service. I ensure that these strategies should be implemented.
There are so many websites about this stuff, and a lot of info was mentioned on them. This is one of them, and they have done it amazingly. I am going to share this blog.
All desireable features were well addressed save one, which is my biggest and perhaps most painful re-occurring annoyance in landscaping work. That is weed “hitchhikers”, which have a tenacity that ONLY Mother Nature could have thought up. Those inward-boring critter-like entities enter thru all laced boots, and any material that can be bored through. All of the creature comforts and safety items seem to be negated when my boot and socks are penetrated to victimize my feet.
It might seem like the fix is pull-on boots with very high shafts… perhaps even to the knees. YOut thoughts, please…
