If I know something about machinists is that they are always on their feet. I mean, I don’t know about any other occupation that is as demanding as this one.
I tend to complain about being many hours on my feet, but I haven’t seen any other man that works so many hours on his feet as my friend Barry. I know Barry since high school, and he’s a machinist. He tells me that on any given day he works up to 12 hours straight standing on his feet operating machinery, without taking any breaks. I told him that he must have very comfortable and supportive work boots, and he said he tried with lots of them but none of them seemed to work.
That’s why I decided to help Barry and many of my other friends who share the same line of work, by doing this post that goes about the 6 best work boots for machinists.
The 3 Most Comfortable Work Boots For Machinists: Non-Steel Toe Boots Selection
When thinking about how to organize this article I quickly came up with the idea of reviewing 6 different work boots. The first three, are a selection of non-steel toe boots, which are more comfortable and very supportive for the machinist who is used to work standing up for close to 12 hours straight.
- 1) Red Wing Heritage Iron Ranger Boots
- 2) Danner Men’s Vicious 4.5 Inch Non-Metallic Toe Work Boots
- 3) Wolverine Men’s W03123 Durashock SR Boots
1) Red Wing Heritage Iron Ranger Boots
Best Durability
All machinists have got to work long and hard, day and night. This situation ends up taking a toll on the boots they use. So, it is fair to say that durability must be a focus when getting a new pair of work boots. On that account, these Red Wing boots are made using the Goodyear Welt construction method that adds years of durability.
These Boots Were Made For Standing Long Hours
When you think about what work boots might be the best for a machinist, you can think of wide variety as there are a lot of them out in the market. But when it comes down to it, there are only a few ‘winners’ and these Red Wing boots would be part of those few. If we talk about comfort, I can tell you that a boot’s nickel eyelets and hooks are usually what makes a boot uncomfortable. But that is not the case with these Red Wing boots. The placement of those parts is made in such a way that it absolutely does nothing to interfere with the boot’s comfort offer.

- Leather Insole
- 48-inch Black/Brown Taslan Lace

I Love The Comfort They Offer
When choosing a new pair of work boots, machinists tend to think of the many features that boots offer. But I’m convinced when I tell you that the most important one is comfort. With this in mind, these particular Danner boots do a great job providing exceptional comfort.
First of all, the Danner Trailguard platform will give you a more lightweight feel making it easier to carry. Moreover, the sole is oil and slip resistant, making the boots have more traction which is essential for machinists.
Overall, Impressive Durability and Quality Materials
When a pair of boots have both good comfort and safety features, it’s often said that this comes at the cost of low durability and not-so-good quality. Most people think there must be a trade-off somewhere. But with these Danner boots that is not the case. The abrasion-resistant toe cap is built to withstand the most extreme of surfaces, which is what makes these boots be among the most durable boots in the market today. Furthermore, the material used in the boot’s construction is a top-quality full-grain leather that offers great moisture protection.

But, the good news is that these Timberland Pitboss boots are among the most protective boots in the market.

5) Irish Setter Men’s 83608 Steel Toe Work Boots
Heavy Duty Ergonomics and Comfort
After having talked with many machinists for the last couple of weeks, if there is something that stuck with me is that comfort takes an essential place in their life. But, there are many ways that comfort is delivered. The most important delivery method, in my opinion, is ergonomics. And when it comes to ergonomics, these Irish Setter work boots do a really good job.
After taking them out of the books I noticed how heavy duty these boots were. I wondered how a heavy duty fit is so comfortable for a couple of minutes, then I realized that there was a padded collar added for extra comfort, which explained a lot. Later, I understood that comfort was also there thanks to the PU removable footbed which was cushioned for delivering all day comfort. Finally, after wearing this pair for almost a month I started to feel like my steps were lighter which was due to the EVA midsole that caused superior cushioned support.
Impressed With The Security Features..
If there is something I realized when creating this article is that safety is a must for all machinists. I mean, the risks involved with this beautiful occupation are too many. Nowadays, all machinist must get boots that surpass the most respected safety standards.
And one of those pair of boots that meets them but also goes above and beyond is this pair of Irish Setter work boots. After closely examining them, I came to the conclusion that the aluminum safety toe that met the ASTM F2413-11, M I/75 C/75, EH safety standards, was a pivotal protective feature of these boots.
And after wearing them for a couple of weeks I felt like the security features were truly something to brag about, which is something never do!

Beautiful, Flexible and Comfortable
After many years falling in love with reviewing work boots, I understood that there are many boots out there that are beautiful in nature. Some of them are extremely flexible and light due to the material being used while others specialize in comfort by emphasizing simplicity. But there is rarely a case where one item has all three of these factors. Hence it is easy to see why I am excited about this Georgia Boots.
I mean, when I first put them on I felt exactly how the steel shank provided a top-notch support in every step of the way. When it was time to test them by walking on various surfaces, I realized how the covered insole was cushioned which gave added comfort to my feet. On top of that, after taking a glance at them for a few minutes I saw how beautiful these Georgia boots were. The 3 Features To Look For in The Best Work Boots For Machinists
Tested Durability
If I learned something after many years of reviewing boots is that the best work boots for machinists need to be durable. Why? you might be asking.. and the answer is because when it comes to the environment where a machinist works, there is a heavy use of machines and various sharp metals. Some of them are so sharp that will put any pair boots up to the hardest test.
Remember, you don’t want to be using boots that won’t last you more than six months. There is no greater feeling for me than knowing that I spent a little bit more money to get boots that have a top-quality leather which will go through tough external conditions as if it was nothing.
Protection To Keep You Safe From Falling Objects
As a machinist, your protection has to start from your toes. You won’t believe the number of accidents many of my machinist friends told me that happen in their workplace. This is why it is necessary to have a pair of boots that can offer you the right level of protection.
And what better way of keeping your feet safe from harm than with a quality safety steel toe. I remember as if it was yesterday when I first used a pair of steel toe boots. They saved my feet from getting crushed as a heavy hammer fell from my table.
Reliable Comfort For 12-hour Work Shifts Standing Up
Comfort is paramount if you want to get the best work boots for machinists.
It won’t take you too much time to understand that manufacturing and other forms of industries where heavy machines are operated require you to do your job standing on your feet for most of the time. On that account, comfortable work boots are going to ensure that you don’t get tired fast. This way you will be able to work for a long time comfortably.
Secondly, if you get the wrong boots this will likely lead to injuries, especially foot injuries. I have seen many guys having various of these types of injuries in all of my years as a worker. And this is especially true for machinists since they do all kinds of heavy work which include carrying tools and operating heavy machinery.
Check If Your Employer Requires Steel Toe Work Boots
If you read the entire article, you noticed two types of work boots I talked about:
- Non-steel toe boots.
- Safety steel toe work boots.
It’s a little bit obvious what I’m about to say, but nevertheless, you should check with your employer if you’re required to use steel toe work boots in your job as a machinist. Remember, there is nothing more awful than getting a pair of work boots to later return it because an employer’s requirement you didn’t know about.
I’ve been a machinist a long time. While I know everybody’s preference and requirements differ I can agree with the irish setters on your list as ive owned a pair I really liked. I’ve loved my thorogood american heritage and surprised they didn’t have a mention?
Adam
Hi,
I thought long and hard on including the Thorogood American heritage on this list, but the truth is that there were better boots for machinist.
I’ll probably include them in a future update of the article.
I’m really thankful for your comment!
I followed your guide as I am starting a job in a metal fabrication shop. I bought the Timberland Pro Pitboss boots do to your review saying those are hands down the best ones out of them all. Very disappointed because I only wore them for less than 2 hrs at home and could not continue to wear them. They caused pain and pressure to my ankles. I tried loosening how I was tieing them and did not help at all JUNK right out of the box.
Hello! I’m machinist and looking for the most comfortable pair of boots for the job (my feets gets very sore from the ones I have). This article is a bit old now, so to my question: arethose still the best boots for a machinist? I was leaning torwards Timberland Boondock WaterProof 6, but it was not even mentioned here.
Best regards
Renan
Hey!
I work as a machinist onboard a ship and I’ve been having pain in my feets after working long hours (10-12 h). My work is always inside so weather is not an issue, and the temperature inside the engine room tends to be around 30 C.
Timberland Boondock 6 seems to be the most comfort, but I’m afraid it might be too heavy and bulky to work inside?
Danner Men’s Vicious 4.5 seems to be a bit smaller, but idk if it’s comfortable enough compared to Boondock.
Carhartt Men’s CMF6366 6 and WOLVERINE Men’s Overpass are good mentions too.
Do you have any inputs on those mentioned boots or maybe a better one for the job? Comfort is the most important because my feets hurt so much, but weight and bulkiness of the shoe matters too.
Best regards
Renan
